Introduction |
While with server-side programming it is entirely possible to create a dynamic website without using a database, when the application becomes more serious or the site is intended for e-commerce, you'll find a database indispensable. This section about Databases has several separate bookshelves for the major databases and technologies used on the web. You'll find shelves not only about MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server, Access, ODBC and ADO but also database design in general and SQL. |

Database Design and SQL |
Of course you can jump into working with databases by getting just one or more books for the database you're going to work with. Unfortunately, unless you already have a considerable background in database work, you'll likely miss something: a book about SQL Server will teach you the SQL dialect for Microsoft's database management system, and maybe some design principles, but you'll be seeing the world through colored glasses and probably completely missing the basics of design as well. On this page about Database Design and SQL you'll find books that are about database design and SQL in general, without dealing with one
particular product. Here you'll find the background you need for a solid design and a good grasp of SQL that will allow you to move more easily
between different manufacturers' products.

MySQL |
MySQL is one of the most frequently-used databases on the Web. The reasons are manifold, but given that it's free,
and in many cases outperforms big-name (and expensive) commercial database systems this is not all that hard to understand.
With PHP, which has native support for MySQL and many millions of installations, it forms a hard to beat combination which is provided
by many hosting providers. Here you'll find my recommendations for books about MySQL.
