Introduction |
These are books I recommend about Dynamic HTML (HTML). Please note that I don't own any books about Dynamic HTML, so I'm recommending these based on readers' reviews and comments about these books in on-line discussion forums. |

DHTML and CSS for the World Wide Web, 2nd Edition: Visual QuickStart Guide
Background
Another recent book. If you like the format of the Visual Quickstart Guides, this would be the book
for you. It will certainly help if you are a visual rather than a textual learner. Otherwise, it's pretty much a toss-up between this book
and the book by Dan Livingston above.

Dynamic HTML: The HTML Developer's Guide
Background
This looks like another good candidate, again with good coverage of cross-browser issues.
One reason why I might even prefer this one to the book mentioned first on this page is that there is a companion web site with tons of
information and listings from the book. The book does assume some basic knowledge about the subject though, so don't start with this one.
Not quite so recent, either.

Dynamic HTML: The Definitive Reference
Background |
This hefty tome covers it all and explains everything in detail. The implementation differences between the version 4 browsers are not forgotten and you'll find detailed guidelines for how to code around these differences and make your site work with both. There isn't much to say about dHTML that you won't find in this book, except what came after this book was written. Dated by now, but still available and potentially useful. Danny Goodman writes on his site:
Yes, there will be a second edition of the DHTMLDefRef to cover browsers through NN6 and IE5.5, but at the moment there is no specific ETA--which means it is many months away. Stay tuned...I need the new edition as much as you do.

IE5 Dynamic HTML Programmer's Reference
Background
If you are designing for an Intranet which has standardized on Microsoft's
browser, have a look at this book. At least the title makes it clear what it concentrates on; it uses the IE-specific
VBscript instead of JScript, making the code hard to adapt for other browsers.

Instant Netscape Dynamic HTML Programmer's Reference: NC4 Edition
Background
This book is just as 'centric' as the previous one, only here the center of attention is
Netcape's version 4 browser. I'll leave it to you to answer the question why this book has 70 pages less than the
IE4 book above (no emails please!). If you're designing for an Intranet standardized on Netscape's offerings, you
should have a look at this book anyway. Dated by now, but still available; its usefulness is probably a lot less than that of the previous
book though, because Netscape really has lost market share to Internet Explorer by now.
