We're moving!

This whole site is being moved to a shiny new server - as are all my sites, in fact. Apologies for the bumpy road ahead, but at the end of that road things will become fast and smooth.

Once the site at the new server is ready, this message will automatically disappear!

Meanwhile, you can see how the move is progressing at the status page.

Introduction

So far, there are only three books about HomeSite which is pretty amazing given that the program is used by more than a million users and is the preferred tool in more than half the professional web development shops. Anyway, with so few books, I'm simply listing them all.

HomeSite 4.5 Fast & Easy Web Development
(Amazon.co.uk)

by John W. Gosney
Paperback - 366 pages Bk&Cd-Rom edition (February 15, 2001)
Premier Press, Inc
ISBN: 0761531823

(On order) The latest of the meagre crop, this book is also aimed at relative beginners. A lot of attention is given to standard configuration options and how to use (most of) the standard features and tools, none to extensibility. On the other hand, this book contains useful information about using projects, and working with ASP and CFML. (A pity it doesn't also treat PHP.)

Still, it's high time for a book on the more advanced features of HomeSite such as extensibility through customization of toolbars, VTML and scripting tasks with the VTOM. to menu

Homesite 4.5 for Dummies

by Nick Bradbury, Rhonda Crowder, David A. Crowder
Paperback - 380 pages Bk&Cd-Rom edition (May 2000)
Hungry Minds, Inc
ISBN: 0764507079

Background

(In my library) Nick Bradbury, the original developer of the HomeSite program, appears here as the coauthor of a book about it though at the time of writing he wasn't involved in its development any more. HomeSite was acquired along with Nick as development director by Allaire, but he left the company later to develop TopStyle (which integrates nicely with HomeSite; a trial version is included on the CD). I think this book actually does a much better job of getting you up to speed with the program than the older book below. (Actually, if you already own - or are evaluating - version 4.5, don't even consider the book below which is about 4.0 only: it won't help with 4.5 very much.) to menu

Teach Yourself HomeSite 4 in 24 Hours
(Amazon.co.uk)

by Ben Forta
Paperback - 338 pages 2nd Bk&Cd-Rom edition (May 19,1999)
Sams
ISBN: 0672315602

Background

(In my library) Maybe you're lucky this book is (currently) out of stock at Amazon. The book was mostly written while HomeSite 4.0 was still in beta, and too hastily published, with the result that there are screenshots illustrating "features" which were actually bugs and later solved. The title also confuses, since HomeSite 4.01 was followed by 4.5 - blame Allaire for that confusion, though, since they did treat version 4.5 as a 'major' version, contrary to industry conventions. If you find yourself in the situation of having to work with HomeSite 4.0(1) this might be the book for you: HomeSite 4.5 really is very different in many respects and the more recent books treat that version. However, if you still use version 4.0(1), you may be able to get a second-hand copy.

One additional warning: while this book does a decent job of getting you up to speed with the HomeSite 4.0(1) program, ignore whatever it tries to teach you about HTML. In that respect it's full of downright wrong or misleading information (sorry, Ben!) and you really need a good book about HTML alongside this book. to menu
