We're moving!

This whole site is being moved to a shiny new server - as are all my sites, in fact. Apologies for the bumpy road ahead, but at the end of that road things will become fast and smooth.

Once the site at the new server is ready, this message will automatically disappear!

Meanwhile, you can see how the move is progressing at the status page.

Introduction

I hate to admit it, but I haven't gotten started with Linux yet. (Too busy maintaining this website and writing tools and extensions for HomeSite and Studio is a good enough excuse for now.) Whether you have already started with Linux or not, you're likely to find a few books on this page that you'll want in your library. My recommendations are partly based on reader reviews, and partly on my experiences with certain publishers.

Linux For Dummies, 3rd Edition
(Amazon.co.uk)

by Dee-Ann LeBlanc, Melanie Hoag, Evan Blomquist
Paperback - 384 pages Bk&Cd-Rom edition (November 2000)
Hungry Minds, Inc
ISBN: 0764507443

I love the "Dummies" computer books - they always get me started quickly on a particular subject, after which I can get on with a more detailed book that would leave me floundering without this introduction. So if you need to get started with Linux, this is the book I'd recommend. See below for more "Dummies" books about specific Linux distributions.

Running Linux (3rd Edition)
(Amazon.co.uk)

by Matt Welsh, Matthias Kalle Dalheimer, Lar Kaufman, Matthew Welsh
Paperback - 730 pages (August 1999)
O'Reilly & Associates
ISBN: 156592469X

Background

Once you've gotten started with Linux with the book above, or one of the distribution-specific books below, this is the book to get into the nitty gritty of things. Of course, solid and in-depth information is what you'd expect from an O'Reilly book, and that's precisely what you'll find here. For doing things the Linux way; the information applies to most distributions, or tells about the differences. to menu

Linux System Administration (Linux Library)
(Amazon.co.uk)

by Vicki Stanfield, Roderick Smith, Roderick W. Smith
Paperback - 608 pages 1st edition (February 15, 2001)
Sybex
ISBN: 0782127355

With such glowing reviews from all who commented on the book at Amazon, you can't run any great risk buying this book. If you need to do System Administration for a Linux system, this is the book to get. Written from the perspective of the Red Hat distribution, but it points out differences with other distributions where necessary. Gain control of your Linux system!
