We're moving!

This whole site is being moved to a shiny new server - as are all my sites, in fact. Apologies for the bumpy road ahead, but at the end of that road things will become fast and smooth.

Once the site at the new server is ready, this message will automatically disappear!

Meanwhile, you can see how the move is progressing at the status page.

Introduction

Here are my recommendations for books Unix, an excellent platform to run webservers: I own the first two books myself, and I use them a lot (as coffee stains illustrate).

cover
Unix for Dummies
(Amazon.co.uk)

by John R. Levine, Margaret Levine Young
Paperback - 408 pages 4th Edition edition (September 9, 1998)
Hungry Minds, Inc
ISBN: 0764504193

Background

(In my library) Some people think 'Dummies' in a title is insulting; I simply think we're all dummies about something. The Dummies books (at least the computer series) generally contain good, solid information in easily digestible chunks and this one certainly does. This is the book I use to learn the basics about Unix from (I've learned some of them by now, but not all of them). (I have the 1997 edition.) When I need more details, I grab the 'Nutshell' book below. to menu

cover
Unix in a Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference for SVR4 and Solaris 7 (3rd Edition)
(Amazon.co.uk)

by Daniel Gilly, Mike Loukides
Paperback - 598 pages (November 15, 1999)
O'Reilly & Associates
ISBN: 1565924274

Background

(In my library) Not a text book to learn Unix from but a handy reference and great to find more details once you've learned the basics of a command. Covers Unix and many of the utilities that come with it. This one has the most coffeestains, since I use it a lot in spite of the fact that the publishing date is the oldest. to menu

cover
Essential System Administration, 2nd Edition: Nutshell Handbook
(Amazon.co.uk)

by Æleen Frisch
Paperback - 788 pages (December 1996)
O'Reilly & Associates
ISBN: 1565921275

Background

I've put this book on my wishlist: if you cannot just use a Unix system set up for you by a system administrator but have to do (some) administration yourself, this book has a lot to offer. From O'Reilly, so the content is almost guaranteed to be solid. Don't be misled by the publication date, but have a look at the recent user reviews at Amazon.com! to menu

cover
UNIX For Dummies Quick Reference
(Amazon.co.uk)

by Margaret Levine Young, John R. Levine
Paperback - 224 pages 4th Edition (September 1, 1998)
Hungry Minds, Inc
ISBN: 0764504207

From the same authors who wrote Unix for Dummies, this small and inexpensive book could come in very handy, too. Especially if you already know the basics of Unix, and all you need is a quick reminder about a particular action or the syntax of a command. If you're still learning Unix, Unix for Dummies is the better choice to get you started. to menu

cover
Learning the Unix Operating System, 5th Edition: Nutshell Handbook
(Amazon.co.uk)

by Jerry Peek, Grace Todino, John Strang
Paperback - 174 pages (January 15, 2002)
O'Reilly & Associates
ISBN: 0596002610

Background

Yet another O'Reilly offering about Unix. If you don't like the "Dummies's" books style or humor, this would probably your best bet to get started with Unix. Hot off the press! to menu

cover
UNIX System Administration Handbook
(Amazon.co.uk)

by Evi Nemeth, Garth Snyder, Scott Seebass, Trent R. Hein
Paperback - 853 pages 3rd edition (August 2000)
Prentice Hall PTR
ISBN: 0130206016

If you need to do more than use a Unix system set up for you by a system administrator, this book will teach you how to do system administration yourself. With cross-platform information, it has much to offer for beginners as well as experienced administrators. to menu
