We're moving!

This whole site is being moved to a shiny new server - as are all my sites, in fact. Apologies for the bumpy road ahead, but at the end of that road things will become fast and smooth.

Once the site at the new server is ready, this message will automatically disappear!

Meanwhile, you can see how the move is progressing at the status page.

Introduction

These are books I highly recommend about Windows (both NT and 2000), much-used platforms to run webservers.

Windows NT in a Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference for System Administrators
(Amazon.co.uk)

by Eric Pearce, Beverly Murray Scherf
Paperback - 425 pages (July 1997)
O'Reilly & Associates
ISBN: 1565922514

(In my library) Even though NT has been succeeded by Windows 2000, this book still contains plenty of information you really can't do without if you have to maintain or administer a Windows machine. If you run your server on a Windows NT platform instead of Unix, this is the book to get. I don't but I run my systems at home under Windows NT and Windows 2000 and I find much in this book that I can't find elsewhere. to menu

Securing Windows NT/2000 Servers for the Internet: A Checklist for System Administrators
(Amazon.co.uk)

by Stefan Norberg, Deborah Russell
Paperback - 216 pages 1st edition (November 2000)
O'Reilly & Associates
ISBN: 1565927680

Background

Windows NT and 2000 have the potential of being very secure systems; unfortunately, the standard installation leaves the system leaking on all sides and in both directions, making it an easy target for attacks. Configuring Windows for secure Internet use is a complex task, but this book will show you the way. Essential reading for those who are responsible for a Windows web server outside the firewall.

Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit
(Amazon.co.uk)

by Microsoft Corporation (Editor)
Paperback - 7296 pages Package edition (January 19, 2000)
Microsoft Press
ISBN: 1572318058

If you are responsible for the administration of Windows 2000 servers, or even just one critical one (the one that runs your company's web site), you absolutely need this. For a single, non-critical machine you can get by with an O'Reilly book and on-line references, but for anything more you need the information and tools in this set: ,most of this information simply isn't available elsewhere and neither are most of the tools. It may seem like a lot of money (even with Amazon's sharp discount) but the contents are well worth it. Also, don't miss the supplement! to menu
