We're moving!

This whole site is being moved to a shiny new server - as are all my sites, in fact. Apologies for the bumpy road ahead, but at the end of that road things will become fast and smooth.

Once the site at the new server is ready, this message will automatically disappear!

Meanwhile, you can see how the move is progressing at the status page.

Introduction

Some books just don't fit cleanly into any category that would make sense to webmasters and web designers since they aren't 'howto' books or books to give you ideas about designing websites - yet make interesting reading for that same target group So here you'll find some 'Other books' that I found interesting, and you might, too.

Why Things Bite Back: Technology and the Revenge of Unintended Consequences
(Amazon.co.uk)

by Edward Tenner
Paperback - 368 pages Reprint edition (September 1997)
Vintage Books
ISBN: 0679747567

(In my library) This book is not about the web, not even about computers, although they do make an appearance in this book. In a sense complementary to Norman's book Things That Make Us Smart about adapting technology to human needs, this book explores how technology, almost invariably developed and adopted to make things better, or easier to do, can actually result in unforeseen and sometimes disastrous consequences. From exotic plants choking rivers to computers that would help us organize information but contributed to information overload more than any previous technology. Fascinating and thought provoking, at times even scary. to menu

Weaving the Web: The Original Design and Ultimate Destiny of the World Wide Web by Its Inventor
(Amazon.co.uk)

by Tim Berners-Lee, with Mark Fischetti
Hardcover - 226 pages (September 22, 1999)
Harper San Francisco
ISBN: 0062515861

Background

(In my library) Tim Berners-Lee is a visionary of the kind that doesn't just imagine how things could be, but sets about to make it happen, and motivate other people to help making it happen. As most of you who read this will know, he is the inventor of the World Wide Web, and now the director of the W3C. The history of how the WWW came to be, and what it could (or should) become, makes fascinating reading. I read the book in one sitting. to menu

The Victorian Internet: The Remarkable Story of the Telegraph and the Nineteenth Century's On-Line Pioneers
(Amazon.co.uk)

by Tom Standage
Paperback - 227 pages (April 1999)
Orion Paperbacks / Berkley Pub Group
ISBN: 0425171698

Background

(On order) The invention that made almost instant mass communications possible, caused whole new types of businesses to be invented, enormous social impact, economic boom and bust. Internet and dotcoms? No, the telegraph, way back in the 1800's. There were even a few "Online romances" and marriages connected with the telegraph. Tom Standage tells you all about it and draws parallels with the present-day Internet. Required reading for every Internet professional. to menu
