Site Building (software)

You won't be surprised to find that the shelf with Site Building software is the first to be filled in the software section of The Bookstore. And given that this Bookstore is part of HomeSite Help you'll expect to find the latest version of HomeSite at the top of the list - and won't be disappointed. Of course there are numerous products to create your website code with, so this is necessarily only a small selection. I've also limited myself to products for the Windows platform (after all I have to draw a line somewhere, and Windows happens to be what I'm using myself), but you'll find other versions (if available) in the 'Amazon recommends' sidebar.

Well, what other product would you expect at the top of this page? ;-) In spite of limited development resources after Macromedia's takeover of Allaire, this version has a lot of improvements over the previous one. A lot of those are not immediately obvious when you open the program, but they're there. The very buggy 'Design View', based on a no longer supported Microsoft component, has sensibly been removed. (If you really need WYSIWYG, you should use Dreamweaver: HomeSite never was intended to be a WYSIWYG tool.) In its place you get extensive support for the XHTML 1.0 standard, a vastly improved Validator, a second Files tab, and even better extensibility than before. Of course, if you already have an older version of HomeSite, you probably qualify for the upgrade.

If you have HomeSite 3.x or 4.x you can use this upgrade. Note that this doesn't apply to the versions of HomeSite that came bundled with Dreamweaver: while those are full versions that don't expire, they are not upgradable; if you want a newer version than that, you'll have to buy the full product - it's more than worth the price though.

ColdFusion Studio is, as always, based on HomeSite: that means you get all of the functionality of HomeSite plus special facilities for developing ColdFusion code against a ColdFusion application server, such as debugging and live database connections. If ColdFusion isn't the only application server you're developing for, HomeSite may actually a better choice since it can provide server mapping against any server to check your code. Or if you want painless development for a relatively simple database-driven site, Dreamweaver UltraDev may be a better choice. Of course ColdFusion Studio 5 supports all extensions in the ColdFusion 5 application server.

JRun Studio is for JRun and JSP what ColdFusion Studio is for ColdFusion. Actually, it supports both the JRun/JSP and ColdFusion backends. This version does not have extended functionality of HomeSite 5, though: if you want to use JRun to generate XHTML-compliant code, you may be better off with HomeSite 5 which has support for JSP tags, though you'd miss the debugging, compilation and and live database connections. Of course you could use both products in combination.

If you really need a WYSIWYG tool to build your website, this is probably the best one around. A word of warning though: it does not have complete support for Internet standards, even the previous standards for HTML and CSS. On the other hand, this boxed version comes with a full version of HomeSite which you can (and should) use as your code editor instead of Dreamweaver's own - and HomeSite has always been designed to provide support for Internet standards. In addition, you can use HomeSite to write server-side code like PHP. Perl or ASP, for which Dreamweaver doesn't have support.

Actually, I don't recommend you get the download version: it may look cheaper, but it isn't actually since you don't get HomeSite in the package. (Also, people have reported problems because of the huge size of the download.)

UltraDev is to Dreamweaver what CF Studio is to HomeSite - but even more so. It contains everything Dreamweaver does, but adds support for several applications server backends: ColdFusion, ASP and JSP with JavaBean support; and with live database connections you're able to design (relatively simple) database-driven web applications. Also, like Dreamweaver, the boxed version comes with a bundled full version of HomeSite which you should install as you code editor instead of UD's built-in one.
