We're moving!

This whole site is being moved to a shiny new server - as are all my sites, in fact. Apologies for the bumpy road ahead, but at the end of that road things will become fast and smooth.

Once the site at the new server is ready, this message will automatically disappear!

Meanwhile, you can see how the move is progressing at the status page.

Introduction

While by now there is a wealth of information available on-line about Accessibility and the web, not many books have been written about it yet. This page therefore simply lists what is available now. Keep watching, though, several other books are being written; when such a book can already be pre-ordered you'll find it on this page.

Web Accessibility for People with Disabilities
(Amazon.co.uk)

by Mike Paciello
Paperback - 392 pages 1st edition (October 2000)
CMP Books
ISBN: 1929629087

Background

(In my library) Many people, when they even think about accessibility, think they have to provide a (boring) text-only version of their website. The reality is that a text-only version can actually be considerably less accessible to many people. Mike Paciello does a great job in this book by beginning to explain what kinds of disabilities exist and how they impact using the web. The secret of accessible web design is to make a single version that is accessible to everyone. The author, founder and CTO of WebABLE, and one of the forces behind the W3C's Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) gives a useful overview of accessibility standards and legal requirements in many countries. He explains the various techniques to make pages accessible, and how various software supports this, as well as the tools and techniques available to disabled Web users.

You should be aware, though, that this book came out in 2000 and the product reviews were out of date even then. For example, HomeSite Version 3.01 is discussed in the book, but by the time of publication version 4.01 was out and widely used, with extensive support for accessibility features of HTML which version 3.01 didn't have (I should know, I wrote much of that :)). An excellent book that will give you great insight and practical advice, but it's time for a 2nd edition.

Adaptive Technology for the Internet: Making Electronic Resources Accessible to All
(Amazon.co.uk)

by Barbara T. Mates, Doug Wakefield, Judith M. Dixon
Paperback - 192 pages (November 2000)
Amer Library Assn Editions
ISBN: 0838907520

If you work somewhere where the information in HTML is not just published on the open Internet but made available (as well) to an 'internal' public, such as a library or a university, this book will be a welcome addition to Mike Paciello's book: while it does have a (basic) chapter on HTML design, it concentrates on the various assistive technologies that are available for making electronic information accessible for all, including those with disabilities. Both accessible HTML and the assistive technologies play a role in making information available, and they need to cooperate well. to menu
