We're moving!

This whole site is being moved to a shiny new server - as are all my sites, in fact. Apologies for the bumpy road ahead, but at the end of that road things will become fast and smooth.

Once the site at the new server is ready, this message will automatically disappear!

Meanwhile, you can see how the move is progressing at the status page.

Introduction

Web Design is a large subject. In this section of The Bookstore I'm concentrating on the process and methods of designing a website rather than particular languages or software packages. You'll find separate bookshelves about Design in general (books to inspire, and books about general principles of design), Getting Started, Advanced Subjects. Interface Design, Usability and Accessibility.

Design in General

Here are some great books about Design in General, from design of everyday things to visualisation for information. And don't worry about the publication dates of these books: if they seem old, that's only because they are already classics (and still in print). Necessary baggage for any web designer: take a break with one of these and be inspired!

Getting Started

These are books I recommend about Getting Started; they are mostly aimed at a 'beginners' level. That is a vague concept, of course, but I had to make a split somewhere. So don't forget to loook at the Advanced Web Design page and the other pages in this section, too, to see if there's anything for you there.

Web design is a difficult category anyway: where you come from is all-important in determining which book you'll get the most out of - and web designers come to the field from all sorts of disciplines. So for now, I'm listing a few books that are clearly aimed at people coming from different backgrounds to web design but still are beginners in this field; be prepared to unlearn a few things!

Advanced Subjects

These are books I recommend about Advanced Subjects; they are mostly aimed at advanced developers or people responsible for large-scale web sites. Though even 'large-scale' is a flexible concept: one 20-page site can be much more complicated than another 100-page site, so you might want to have a look at the Basic Web Design page and other pages in this Bookstore section as well. These books are about how to get from idea to a usable, navigable and effective web site. And what lies beyond.

Accessibility

While by now there is a wealth of information available on-line about Accessibility and the web, not many books have been written about it yet. This page therefore simply lists what is available now. Keep watching, though, several other books are being written; when such a book can already be pre-ordered you'll find it on this page.

Finding other books

You can use these search forms to search Amazon.com's or Amazon.co.uk's catalog for books, software, and more. And mail let me know what you missed so I can add it!
