We're moving!

This whole site is being moved to a shiny new server - as are all my sites, in fact. Apologies for the bumpy road ahead, but at the end of that road things will become fast and smooth.

Once the site at the new server is ready, this message will automatically disappear!

Meanwhile, you can see how the move is progressing at the status page.

Introduction

By far the most-used web server is Apache. No wonder since it's open source, free, and extremely powerful and flexible. Of course to get the most out of it, you have to learn how to use all that power; that's what this selection of recommended books is all about.

Apache Server For Dummies
(Amazon.co.uk)

by Ken A. L. Coar
Paperback - 384 pages Bk&Cd-Rom edition (January 23, 1998)
Hungry Minds, Inc
ISBN: 0764502913

If you like the "Dummies" and are using an Apache web server, this book would be a good way to get started. For both Unix and Windows NT webmasters. As always with the "Dummies" books, once you've learned the basics, move on to a more solid book for in-depth information, or the O'Reilly Pocket Reference below. to menu

Professional Apache
(Amazon.co.uk)

by Peter Wainwright
Perfect Paperback - 800 pages 1st edition (November 1999)
Wrox Press Inc
ISBN: 1861003021

Background

(In my library) For both an overview with good explanations and a reference, this seems to be the best book around. Interestingly, this book gets much better reader reviews than the O'Reilly book below: often it's the other way round with O'Reilly books compared to Wrox's "Professional" series. I was finding I definitely needed more than just the Apache on-line documentation: it's fine when you know what you're looking for, not if (like me) you still have a lot to learn about what you can (or should) do in the first place.Based on a personal recommendation, reader reviews and a look at the table of contents, I ordered this book rather than the O'Reilly one. Once it arrived, I immediately found some solutions I'd never have found just poking through the on-line reference. I love this book!

For good, solid reference information about the Apache web server, I'd look here. Not a book to learn the basics from but once you've gotten started, this book will rarely fail to give you the information you need. to menu
