Web Server Software in General

We're moving!

This whole site is being moved to a shiny new server - as are all my sites, in fact. Apologies for the bumpy road ahead, but at the end of that road things will become fast and smooth.

Once the site at the new server is ready, this message will automatically disappear!

Meanwhile, you can see how the move is progressing at the status page.

Introduction

These are books I highly recommend about Web Server Software in General in general. I own the first one in the list and even though it's somewhat dated by now it gets a lot of use.

Webmaster in a Nutshell, 2nd Edition: A Desktop Quick Reference
(Amazon.co.uk)

by Stephen Spainhour, Valerie Quercia
Paperback - 523 pages 2nd edition (June 1999)
O'Reilly & Associates
ISBN: 1565923251

Background

(In my library) This is a book I own myself, and I can't do without it. Even though I own the first edition which by now is somewhat dated with respect to the software versions it treats, I still find it indispensible and grab it every time I need to configure something on the web server. The book takes all the essential reference information for the Web and pulls it together into one volume. It covers HTML 4.0, CSS, XML, CGI, SSI, JavaScript 1.2, PHP, HTTP 1.1, and administration for the Apache server. I can always find what I need here to get things working the way I want and it's small enough to read on the tram, too.

sendmail, 2nd Edition
(Amazon.co.uk)

by Bryan Costales, Eric Allman
1046 pages (January 1997)
O'Reilly & Associates
ISBN: 1565922220

Background

The sendmail program is quite powerful, but configuration is not easy and the online documentation is good but rather terse. Although there are more books, this one is considered by most to be the definitive book on sendmail. If you are responsible for a server running sendmail, you need this book! to menu

Stopping Spam

by Alan Schwartz, Simson Garfinkel
Paperback (October 1998)
O'Reilly & Associates
ISBN: 156592388X

Background

It may be out of print in the US, but you can still order it from Amazon. An excellent resource for fighting spam, for both individuals and system administrators. to menu
